Upper Savinja Valley: a quiet base between Ljubljana and Maribor
The Upper Savinja Valley (Zgornja Savinjska dolina) sits in northern Slovenia, about one hour by car from both Ljubljana and Maribor. It gives you Alpine valleys, a ski resort and a river for rafting, without the summer crowds of Bled and Bohinj. Mozirje, at the lower end of the valley, is a practical base: 15 minutes from the motorway and 45 minutes from the Logar Valley.

Why stay in the Upper Savinja Valley
Central location
Ljubljana and Maribor are each about an hour away, the Logar Valley 45 minutes, and the Ljubljana–Maribor motorway 15 minutes. You can reach most of central and eastern Slovenia as a day trip.
Fewer crowds
Bled and Bohinj are among Slovenia's busiest places in summer. The Upper Savinja Valley has similar Alpine scenery with quiet roads, free parking and trails you often have to yourself.
Something in every season
Rafting and hiking from spring to autumn, the snow cave on Raduha in summer, and skiing on Golte in winter.
Honest trade-offs
There is no lake for swimming in the valley itself (Lake Velenje is 20 minutes away), evenings are quiet, and you will want a car.
A 3-day plan
Day 1: Logar Valley and Solčava
Drive up the valley to the Logar Valley (about 45 minutes). Walk from the parking area to Rinka waterfall, where the water drops about 90 m in one fall. Return over the Solčava panoramic road, a road of nearly 20 km at over 1,200 m that stays open all year. In summer, add a guided tour of Snežna jama, a cave at 1,520 m on Mount Raduha.
Day 2: Golte and Mozirje
Take the Golte cable car up to the plateau: skiing from about 1,280 to 1,576 m in winter, hiking in summer. In the afternoon, visit Mozirski gaj flower park in Mozirje. From April to October you can swap the morning for a guided rafting trip on the Savinja between Struga and Ljubno (about 10 km).
Day 3: Ljubljana or Velenje
Spend the day in Ljubljana, about an hour away. For a shorter day, go to Velenje (about 20 minutes) for Lake Velenje and an underground tour at the Coal Mining Museum. On a rainy day, Terme Topolšica spa near Velenje has thermal pools.
With 5 days, add Lake Bled (about 1 hour 20 minutes) and Maribor (about 1 hour), or a hike to Menina planina or Smrekovec closer to home.
